This is an earlier book from Robb’s In Death series, and that seems to mean that it is one of the better books. Dallas and Roarke have been married for one year, in terms of setting the timeline.
This book has one of the more exciting and suspenseful match-ups between Dallas and the murderer du livre. There’s even an exciting extended fight at the show-down. The bad guy is in fact a woman about Dallas’ age, whom Dallas had already put away for murder eight years earlier. She’s out now, and looking to punish Dallas by targeting Roarke.
We get to enjoy some character development as Dallas works to sort through her sad past. Peabody solves her first murder case, working towards promotion from uniform to detective.
All in all, this might be my favourite Dallas book… as far as I can remember. They do blur together a lot because they follow the formula so closely… but this seems to reflect some excitement still on the author’s part, in exploring and expanding the characters. Might even be worth a re-read.
