Santa Olivia – Jacqueline Carey

Santa Olivia is the name of a Texas border town which is locked into a no-mans-land in Jacqueline Carey’s book Santa Olivia.

The only supposed way to get back to ‘the real world’ is to win a prize-fight match with one of the garrisoning soldiers, because the general in charge loves to watch boxing.

Loup is the daughter of a town-woman and a genetically-engineered soldier who comes through and hides with her.

It’s a reasonably good book, although the plot is nowhere near as unstoppable as the Kushiel books. Actually, Olivia compares unfavorably with the Hunger Games. True, this book gives you a fair amount more steamy scenes – though nothing gets as naughty as Kushiel’s Phedre.

I am pretty sure this is the first book in a new series. Yes, I will look up the sequel(s) but I would not buy these.
