Spirit Gate – Kate Elliott

I ended up liking it, but I found it rather hard to get started.  Part of what threw me was the amount of jumping from one point of view to the next (and switching location) and the overlapping timelines sometimes in the same place.  And several of the names were fairly short and rhymed: Bai, Mai, Shai… so it  was 2/3 of the way through the book before I settled into knowing who was who.

By the end, i was enjoying it so much that I immediately re-started it. No kidding. I wanted to understand/remember the beginning better.  It worked out well, and now I am anticipating getting book 2.

Giant Eagles, excellent world-building with many well-grounded cultures and races.
