What a pleasant surprise – Track of the Cat by Nevada Barr. This is the first Anna Pigeon mystery, and it’s really good! Excellent back-story and characterization – these people are not springing forth smooth and featureless – they’ve already had challenges and formed relationships with each other.
Suspenseful action sequences.
I appreciate the skepticism that Anna brings to this (first) murder investigation. Yes, she’s officially law enforcement within the park, but she does not see herself as Miss Marple. Most people wouldn’t, right? So, she ends up becoming friends with her first suspect even as she continues the investigation.
The library had clipped out a newspaper review of one of Barr’s newer books, so I hunted down one of them on the shelf. I am glad I did.
