Oh, my this is pure fluff… but it’s so confidently spun out that you grin and settle back in your armchair.
There are two point-of-view characters, who are also the romantic leads. Travers the CPA and reluctant mage; and Zoe, the 150-year-old mage turned hard-boiled-Vegas-magic-PI. Both are well described, though I do regret that I did not track down Simply Irresistable yet, because that immediately preceded this book.
Vegas is hot and filled with neon. Zoe’s just finishing a job of retrieving a wayward familiar, a very fat dachshund.
So, this is the same author as the Retrieval Artist novels: Kristine Kathryn Rusch. She definitely is able to wear multiple hats.
For all that the atmosphere and people are enjoyably invoked, the heart of the book is still fluffy. The conflict feels a little bit contrived and ends a little abruptly. But, I didn’t expect a chewy center inside the cotton-candy.
Beware – this is completely unrelated to the movie of the same name starring Sarah Michelle Gellar.
